The Good Samaritan Rule

It's a concern many people have when faced with a situation where they are required to provide CPR. If they are not qualified and end up hurting the patient, could they be charged? The short answer is no. The Good Samaritan Rule states that someone that comes to the aid of someone else in imminent danger or peril cannot be sued for wrongdoing or incorrect practices. This encourages people to act and not stand on the sidelines for fear of persecution. Take this scenario: Jenny is not trained in CPR but decides to take action after an elderly neighbour goes

Why You Need to Learn Basic CPR

CPR is one of those things that always sits in the back of your head; you know you probably SHOULD learn it, but you're just so busy it keeps getting pushed back. 'Besides,' you think to yourself, 'I'll probably never have to use it.' Until it happens. The man you see every day at the bus stop but never talk to collapses to the ground. Your elderly neighbour whilst she is taking in her shopping from her car. Your baby becomes unresponsive. Besides the panic crashing over you, you scream at yourself that you SHOULD have taken that class, because

The Importance of Learning CPR in a Workplace

Staff at a Helensvale medical imaging centre did not perform CPR on an elderly woman who suffered a cardiac arrest while in their care, the Coroners Court in Southport has been told. An 87 year old patient went to the imaging centre to have a procedure to help alleviate pain in her lower back on 14 April, 2015. The court was told after an injection the patient felt faint, collapsed and an ambulance was called. She died in the Gold Coast University Hospital five days later. A paramedic on the scene told the inquest when he arrived at the medical centre just

Defibs and CPR: They Go Hand in Hand

Chocolate and strawberries. Bread and butter. Salt and pepper. Some things are just made to go together, and such is the case with defibrillators and CPR. Far from being options you need to pick, they are both practices you need to use together to give a patient the best chance of survival. Let's look at them both separately. First of all is CPR - it's definitely more widely used and many workplaces enforce CPR training as mandatory. If someone goes into cardiac arrest, you should of course commence CPR as soon as possible and call for paramedics. But the

Defibrillators for Construction

The Gold Coast is booming right now in construction, and with all these additional worksites comes the risk of working in medium-high risk environments. We can't recommend enough that defibrillators should be located onsite at all construction areas. Did you know there's only a 10 minute window for a patient to be successfully resuscitated with a defibrillator? If an accident happens onsite, you definitely want an AED within reach! Just last week, we provided Condev Construction with an AED for the site of their next major project. Along with defibrillators, we also stock a wide range of first aid kits

Meet Brett Orpwood, the miracle man! On Saturday 23 December 2017, Brett went into cardiac arrest whilst running with his 8-year-old son in the Murrum Murrum Parkrun in Victoria.   Brett's heart stopped.   CPR was started on Brett straight away by fellow runners and the defibrillator that was supplied by First Aid Accident & Emergency only 2 months previously was used within minutes.   The defibrillator restarted Brett's heart and he was taken to hospital for further treatment.   6 weeks on, our Lead Facilitator Scott Whimpey got to meet Brett in Sydney where he told his
