What are the different types of defibrillators?
Over the years, there have been many different defibrillator models introduced to the market in Australia and internationally. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
AEDs are the most common defibrillators you’ll come across. Modern AEDs are designed to be lightweight and compact—this makes them easy to store and you can transport them from location to location without an issue. These are the defibrillators you will usually see stored in wall cabinets at schools, sports centres or even at your local shopping centre. The purpose of an AED is to detect any irregular heart rhythms present in a patient and to then send a shock if required—this shock is delivered via electrode pads that are attached to the chest of the patient. AEDs are designed to provide the rescuer with easy-to-understand instructions which are simple enough for anyone to follow in an emergency (even those who have never used a defibrillator before and have never received any kind of prior training). Manual defibrillators
A speciality device, manual defibrillators are used by health professionals such as doctors in the emergency department of a hospital.
Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs)
This type of defibrillator device is surgically placed inside the body. These particular defibs are designed for people who are at high risk of heart rhythm issues due to a diagnosed heart condition.
Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillators (WCDs)
These are defibrillators that are worn outside the body. These types of defibs are sometimes worn by individuals who have recently suffered from a heart attack or have experienced other heart-related issues.
